Alternative Cancer Treatments: Giving You All The Tools For Survival

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

There are many instances where people have survived in spite of having been diagnosed with fatal cancers. The reasons behind this are many. Many people are trying alternative treatments for combating cancer. The radiation and chemotherapy which is the usual treatment routine for cancer patients is emotionally and physically draining.

Most of the alternative treatments available are based on the fact that cancer is a physical symptom of imbalance in emotional, spiritual, mental and physical well being. Bringing all these back into balance would treat the cancer affecting you.

1-The first step is to heal emotions and eliminate stress. Emotional stress leads to increased production of adrenalin which culminates in high blood sugar, low levels of oxygen therefore fermentation and mutation of cells leading to cancer. Hence healing these negative emotions is critical for treatment. The usual modes adopted are hypnotherapy, counseling etc.

2-The next step is avoiding stress. Any kind of stress will enhance the cancer cells and thus have to be avoided. Jobs can be changed; residence can be shifted etc with the aim of keeping stress at bay.

3-Reducing stress calms the autonomous nervous system and hence the cortisol levels in the body decrease. Yoga, aromatherapy, meditation, relaxation techniques help in this. Laughter therapy is very commonly used for this purpose. Laughter lowers blood pressure, and boosts immune system which kills the cancer cells.

4-Melatonin levels have to be increased since this is responsible for inhibiting cancer cell growth and the regulation of the immune system. Daily sessions of meditation have increased melatonin levels for the desired affect.

5-Many natural products are seen to possess immune system boosting properties. Recovery from cancer should support the immune system and its components. Wheat germ extract has been found to be very effective in this regard.

6-The body has to be cleansed of viruses, bacteria and fungi. These organisms are responsible for causing disruptions in the Krebs cycle leading to cell mutation and cancer. The parasites have to be de-wormed from the body.

7-Toxins like mycotoxins, chemicals, alcohol, antibiotics etc have to be thrown out of the body. The detoxification has to extend to other organs like gall bladder, colon and the kidneys.

8-The body pH has to be re-alkanized. Smoking, alcohol consumption should be stopped. A healthy diet rich in anti oxidants to be followed. The diet should be rich in anti cancer foods which aid in getting the body rid of cancerous cells. Cancer cells cannot survive in alkaline environment.

9-The inner belief that cancer can be cured has to take deep roots. This confidence in the system would aid in treatment by enhancing progress.

10-Believing that God would help is very calming to the mind and body. Faith in God is proven to increase confidence levels and bring about good health and mental well being.

11-While preparing to start alternative treatment it is better to be prepared for change in a big way like, diet, system, routine etc. The flexibility would make healing faster.

Lung Cancer Symptoms: What To Look For

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Lung cancer symptoms are very elusive and misleading. Mostly the condition is diagnosed only after having reached advanced stages. As of now there is no screening procedure for lung cancer. Symptoms are almost non existent where lung cancer is concerned.

There might be a mild cough or shortness of breath that can also be attributed to some respiratory infections. This is the main reason as to why most of the lung cancer cases go undiagnosed in the early stages. Only a meagre 16% of the cases are diagnosed early enough to facilitate treatment and cure.

Some of the symptoms that we can investigate are as follows:

1-A new persistent cough that refuses to go away. Smokers usually have cough but if they have cancer the severity of the cough would be different.

2-Chest pain is another indication that usually goes unnoticed. The pain can deepen with difficulty in breathing accompanied with cough or laugh.

3-The throat is hoarse and when accompanied with wheezing can indicate inflammation of the lungs which could be cancer.

4-There is gradual loss of weight due to loss of appetite.

5-Hemoptysis or coughing up blood is a sure indication of cancer. The coughed up phlegm would be rust colored showing the presence of blood.

6-The patient can suffer from shortness of breath due to blockage of air caused by pleural effusion or fluid collection around the lungs or spread of tumor in the lungs.

7-Repeated respiratory illnesses like bronchitis and pneumonia are a cause for concern. This could be indicative of lung cancer.

The cancer metastasizes or spreads to other organs in the body; if it goes undetected in the first or early stages. Lung cancer usually is found to spread to the bones, the brain, liver, pericardium or the lining of the heart, adrenal glands and also from one lung to another. The spread of the cancer brings with it the onset of more symptoms like -

1-Bone pain if the cancer has spread to the bones. The pain is felt in the back bone or vertebrae, the thigh bones and the bones making up the ribs.

2-Headaches, weakness of vision, numbness of appendages, dizziness and seizures if the spread of the cancer is to the brain.

3-Jaundice is caused when the liver is affected by the liver. This is usually not detected and is discovered much later. Initial symptoms of the cancer spreading to liver are nonexistent.

4-If the spread of cancer affects the lymph nodes then lumps appear on the surface of the body usually in the neck or above the collar bone.

Clubbed fingers, anemia, fatigue, weight loss, muscle weakness, skin rashes, low sodium content, degeneration of brain etc are all symptoms that have been found to exist in all types of cancer including lung cancer. Incidental chest x rays performed for other infections help in the identification of the condition since there are no specific symptoms that point towards cancer of the lung.

Understanding Mesothelioma Cancer: Causes And Symptoms

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Mesothelioma is cancer that affects the mesothelium which is the lining or membrane that protects and covers most of the internal organs in the body cavity. The first layer encircles the organ and the second layer forms a sac for protection. There is a lubricating fluid present between the layers to facilitate movement. The mesothelium is called pericardium when it covers the heart, pleura when covering the lungs and peritoneum when covering the abdominal organs.

In mesothelioma there is uncontrolled cell division which leads to the extra cell masses invading the nearby tissues and organs and causing damage. Mostly it is observed that mesothelioma begins in the pleura or the peritoneum. The cancer then metastasizes to other parts of the body.

Mesothelioma occurs mostly due to exposure to asbestos. This is considered to be the major risk factor. 70% to 80% of sufferers have a history of exposure to asbestos. There are exceptions to this and cases have been reported where asbestos exposure was found not to exist. The condition is more common in men as compared to women. It has also been found that risk increases with age.

Mesothelioma is a very rare. Mostly said to be associated with workplace exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a collection of minerals that can be made to exist as strong masses of sheets or flexible fibers. It is widely used in industrial products like cement, roofs, flooring products, textiles, brake linings and insulation. Tiny particles of asbestos float in the air and can be inhaled or swallowed by the people exposed to it like the workers in manufacturing companies etc.

Continuous exposure over a period can lead to asbestosis. Exposure to asbestosis increases the risk of developing mesothelioma and other types of cancer like that of kidney and larynx. There are acceptable levels of asbestos exposure that have been brought into effect in workplaces using the mineral. Another very interesting aspect of mesothelioma is that family members of people exposed asbestos in their work place show an increased incidence of this cancer as compared to others. This has been attributed to the fact that the remnants of asbestos particles adhering to the clothes, hair etc when brought home can expose the family members to it.

The cancer takes around thirty to forty years to surface. The initial symptoms include shortness of breath, and pain in the chest if it is the pleura that are affected. If the cancer is in the peritoneum then there is weight loss, abdominal swelling and pain, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, bowel obstruction. Fever, anemia and blood clotting irregularities have also been observed. In severe cases there is swelling of the neck and face, trouble swallowing and severe pain.

Diagnosis of mesothelioma is very difficult since there are no specific symptoms. A medical history review would be very valuable since asbestos exposure needs to be determined. X rays of chest, abdomen, lung function tests, scans, MRI are the usual tools that help in confirming the diagnosis. Biopsy is done for the final confirmation and treatment includes chemotherapy and radiations.

5 Things You Can Do To Prevent Lung Cancer

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Lung cancer is a form that is quite difficult to treat. Simply put lung cancer is the cancer affecting the lung tissues making it difficult for exchange of gases in the respiratory system. It is very elusive and hence difficult to diagnose. The symptoms are not out of the ordinary and hence can mislead the physician.

The patients suffer a lot and treatment is limited and localized. Prevention is the best form of cure as far as cancer is concerned since all forms of cancer are torturous to the mind and body of the individual. Prevention is easier where lung cancer is concerned. Avoiding risk causing substances, the chances of developing it can be reduced or its occurrence can be prolonged.

Things That Can Be Done To Prevent Lung Cancer Are:

Quit Smoking:

The first and the foremost factor is, of course, smoking. This is the main cause of lung cancer. An estimated 87% deaths occur due to lung cancer caused by smoking. Make your body tobacco free. This is the best defense possible against lung cancer. Kicking the habit might be difficult but certainly would be better than suffering from cancer of the lung. Another aspect of smoking is the effect it has on people exposed to the smoke.

Secondhand smoke or the smoke emanating from cigarettes, cigars and pipes is carcinogenic. This smoke is known to contain more than sixty carcinogens or agents that can trigger the process of cancer development. These carcinogens cause changes in cell division and development. The abnormal divisions give rise to excess number of cells which do not have regulatory processes governing them and hence causes malfunctions leading to malignancies.

Eat fruits and vegetables:

Nature itself has provided us with the chemicals required to fight cancer. Antioxidants and flavanoids are substances that aid in repairing damaged cells and helps in protecting the nuclear material or the DNA. These substances are available in abundance in fruits and vegetables. Consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables in a day will go far in keeping cancer at bay. People who are physically active and fit have lesser chances of being succumbed by cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight would be beneficial.

Avoid Exposure to radon:

Radon is a substance that is highly carcinogenic. Exposure to radon and such other radioactive gases can cause lung cancer. Radon is a byproduct of uranium degradation. This is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas which cannot be detected easily. Homes built over natural deposits of uranium can have radon in them and exposure to this is dangerous. Homes should be checked and test for the presence of this deadly carcinogen.

Avoid Exposure to pollutants in workplace:

Pollutants like gasoline, arsenic, beryllium, vinyl chloride, nickel chromates, mustard gas, coal products, chloro methyl ethers, diesel exhaust are carcinogens or agents causing cancer. Workplace can expose you to these agents and it should be reduced or limited in concordance with the employer.

Chemoprevention:

Many cancer specific natural drugs can some times reverse the process of cancer. These drugs can be taken to prevent cancer from occurring in patients with history of the condition. The area dealing with chemoprevention is under active clinical research.

Bone Cancer: Causes, Symptoms And Treatments

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Cancer having its origin in the bones is referred to as bone cancer in medical terms. Bone cancers are relatively uncommon when compared to metastatic (cancer occurring initiated in another organ and spreading to bone tissues) or secondary cancer.

Bone Cancer Causes

Underlying causes behind bone Cancer is still unclear. However, there are certain risk factors that have been identified. Most of them suggest that Estrogen, female hormone, plays an imperative role in development and progress of this cancer. It’s known that women, having menstrual period for the first time before 11 or at a very later stage in their life, are more prone for developing this disease. The reason being that they remain exposed to higher levels of estrogen for a longer period of time. Again, count of menstrual cycle prior to first pregnancy is also considered significant. Experts believe that women having their first child below the age of 20 might be affected in the near future. Breastfeeding offers additional protective effect.

Bone Cancer Symptoms

Bone Cancer Symptoms are many linked to the location of the bone, which has been affected by cancer in the body. Common symptom associated with bone cancer is tenderness, swelling or pain in the affected area. Lump formation might also accompany bone cancer in a patient. Although the detection of lump associated to the cancer is difficult in the early stages, it can be felt when the disease occurs in or around the joints. Still, you cannot consider any of these symptoms as prominent signs of bone cancer.

Bone Cancer Treatment

Treatment for cancer of bone, mainly metastatic cancer, has 2 goals:

-Managing neoplasm

-Managing symptoms produced by local lesion

Prognosis is mainly affected by patient’s age, primary tumor size, lymphatic & blood vessel invasion degree, symptoms duration and tumor location on arm, trunk or leg.

There are 2 methods for treating bone metastasis. Systemic Therapy is aimed for treating cancer cells spread throughout your body. It includes hormone therapy, immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Local therapy is aimed towards killing cancerous cells of a specific portion on the body. It includes surgery and radiation therapy.

Surgery:

It is often extensive and involves the removal of a wide margin of tissue surrounding the tumor. Sarcomas, which involve muscles, also require removing the entire affected group of muscles.

Radiation Therapy:

It is mainly used for preventing local recurrence of radiosensitive tumor and given either before or following the surgery.

Chemotherapy:

Several drugs have proven effective for treating bone & soft tissue sarcoma. However, required dosages for providing a great chance to cure might lead to significant side-effects. Effective agents include cyclophosphamide, etoposide, vincristine, ifosfamide, doxorubicin (Adriamycin), dactinomycin (Actinomycin D), dacarbazine and investigational agent. In some cases, even combinations of all these drugs are used.

Hormone Therapy:

It’s either removal of organs producing hormones promoting growth of specific cancer types (testosterone and estrogen) or drug therapy for keeping hormones from promoting growth of cancer.

Even after completely removing bone or soft tissue sarcoma, significant risk is there that small tumors, left undetected, may spread to other regions in the body. Adjuvant Chemotherapy attempts for eliminating such tumor deposits.

Even, there are safer and effective methods for treating pain. Medications will allow people for being free of pain and continue the activities essential to them.

Condensed Review of Osteosarcoma Among Youth

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Childhood osteosarcoma is a form of malignant bone cancer and the 6th most common form of cancer in children under the age of 15. The disease affects over 500 adults and 400 children every year, with a two-thirds survival rate.

Causes of Osteosarcoma

Unfortunately, the causes behind osteosarcoma are not known. Theories exist about environmental triggers such as fluoride in drinking water or exposure to radium.

Symptoms Associated with Osteosarcoma

Typically, the most common side effect associated with osteosarcoma is pain, often emanating from the tumor location. Larger tumors, particularly those on the knees, can appear as swelling. In addition, because the affected bone is usually weaker, it’s more susceptible to breaking.

Over 50% of all cases of childhood osteosarcoma occur around the knee area.

Risk Factors

Age

The risk for developing osteosarcoma peaks during the adolescent growth period. Some researchers think that there may be a correlation between rapid bone growth development and a child’s risk for developing the cancer.

Gender of the Patient

Osteosarcoma typically occurs in males and is seen twice as frequently as in young women.

Exposure to Radiation

If a patient has been subjected to radiation treatment for other cancers or conditions, they will have a higher risk of contracting the disease.

Additional Bone Diseases

Patients who have suffered from other bone diseases, like Paget’s disease of the bone, have an increased risk of being diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Typically though, this occurs in adults and is rare with children.

Genetics

Childhood osteosarcoma is often more prevalent in children with certain rare cancer syndromes that are inherited - such as retinoblastoma or Li-Fraumeni syndrome.

Types of Osteosarcoma

There are three sub-types of osteosarcoma that can be recognized by how they appear on X-rays and under a microscope. Some of these sub-types have a better prognosis than others.

The three sub-types of osteosarcoma are high-grade, intermediate and low grade. High-grade is a conventional development of the disease characterized by small cell formation. Intermediate grade is periosteal, meaning the membrane around the bones is affected. Low grade is also periosteal, but also includes low grade intrasseous.

How Osteosarcoma is Treated

Osteosarcoma is occasionally treated with surgery - at which point the afflicted limb or a portion of the afflicted limb is amputated. Usually, the patient or parents of the patient choose to use the same surgeon for both the biopsy and the therapeutic surgery.

Patients or the parents of patients should consult with their surgeon about the best method and how best to remove the cancer while saving as much use of the affected arm or leg as possible.

Despite the prevalence of surgery, most cases of childhood osteosarcoma are treated with chemotherapy in conjunction with surgery. There are a variety of drugs used in osteosarcoma chemotherapy programs, with each dose determined by the individual patient and disease.

A child suffering from this affliction - and the parents of this child -have very difficult decisions to make when presented with options of chemotherapy and surgery. Those facing the prospect of an amputation should definitely seek a second medical opinion before moving forward.

Praline Pecans: A Great Snack For Cacncer Survival

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Pralines and nougats are almost of the same type, they only differ in the preparation of the ingredient. Like nougats, pralines are almost always chewy but sometimes it can have a hard consistency, depending on the composition it was made of. Nougats are usually used in chocolates and candy bars like praline pecan.

There are two variations of nougat:

1. White nougat because it is made up of egg whites beaten to have a soft consistency.

2. Brown nougat since it is made from caramelized sugar, thus, making it firmer and crunchy.

Praline in Other Parts of the World

In most parts of Europe, pralines are made from hazelnuts and almonds. Back in the seventeenth century when pralines originated in France, the original recipe was almonds based with a sweet coating of caramelized sugar. In Belgium, Netherlands and Germany, praline is the term used for filled chocolates. In the United Kingdom, pralines are either the chocolate filling or the whole nut pralines. In Louisiana and Texas, praline mixture is incorporated with cream and pecan nuts. Praline candies are more popular in New Orleans and other cities in the Deep South like South Carolina, Savannah, Charleston and Georgia.

Praline Pecans Creation

Praline pecans’ basic ingredients are granulated sugar, brown sugar, butter, cream, vanilla, and of course pecan. The use of pecan nuts is one variation made by the United States since pecans are abundant in the southern regions of the country. But no matter what type of nut is used, still praline pecans are delicious treats and addicting.

The confection made of pecan nut kernels are stirred and mixed in boiling sugar syrup until it is crisp and brown. Its rich creamy taste makes the praline pecan’s flavor different but deliciously tasting than any other delicacy. Once you taste it, you will agree that nothing will ever beat the sweet taste of praline pecans.

Praline Pecans for the Holidays

Praline pecan has been around the bend for quite some time. Its origin dates back some 200 years ago. Though it has developed other varieties, the original praline pecan remains to be the most loved. Its recipe has been passed on from generation to generation. And till now, praline pecan is still the all-time favorite holiday treat well-loved by families.

In the South, praline pecans are a Christmas tradition. It is the famous delicacy served during parties. It is given as gifts, too. If you live in New Orleans near the French Market, you can watch how this delicacy is made. But if you can, it is easy to make them yourself, if you know and you have the “right touch.”

Tanner’s Pecan and Candies has the best praline pecan in town. You do not need to look anywhere else, because here, you will be offered many choices of pecan nut products. Skin Cancer

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Cancers of the skin are the most common types of cancer that afflict people. A shocking one in five people in the United States will have a skin cancer diagnosis, and for Caucasians, the chances are a sobering one in three people will face skin cancer.

Fortunately, most of these brushes with cancer are limited to the early removal of cancerous cells from skin tissue before the disease has a chance to spread. Mortality is low for people who develop skin cancer, but sometimes the skin and tissue removal can cause disfigurement. In such a situation, a skin cancer patient will be referred to a plastic surgeon for reconstruction. Sometimes, a dermatologist will consult with a plastic surgeon from the beginning as a skin cancer removal is planned in order create an outcome that is healthy and aesthetically acceptable.

The cause of the overwhelming amount of skin cancers is exposure to the sun. Protecting yourself and your children from sunburns is crucial to maintaining the health of your skin. Preventing children from getting sunburns is particularly important because a bad blistering burn in childhood can lead to skin cancer years later. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, your chance of developing a cancer of the skin doubles if you have had five or more sunburns.

Three primary categories of skin cancer exist. Each one affects a different type of cell within the tissues of the skin.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma is by far the most common type of skin cancer. This type of skin cancer occurs so frequently, that many cancer registries forego collecting the case data because it would be overwhelming and it is not a particularly deadly form of skin disease. Still, the medical community estimates that about one million new cases of basal cell carcinoma are diagnosed in the United States every year.

This disease is characterized by cancer cells and tumor growth within the basal cells in the deepest layer of the epidermis. If detected and removed early, basal cell carcinoma poses little threat to patients, who generally recover easily although they will continue to have their skin monitored for new problems.

Severe disease and even death can result if basal cell carcinoma is undetected or untreated. Although it does not tend to spread to the rest of the body, it is possible if left uncontrolled.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

The second most common type of skin cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, which is detected in roughly 250,000 people in the United States every year. When this cancer develops, it is the squamous cells within the upper layer of the skin that is afflicted with cancer. Like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma has a high treatment success rate when diagnosed early.

Melanoma

Melanoma is the bad word of skin cancer. It is the most malignant form of skin cancer with the ability to spread aggressively through the body and even cause death. Melanoma strikes the melanocyte cells that produce the pigment melanin in the skin. Fortunately, it is not as widespread as the other two types of skin cancer. Of the estimated 60,000 cases of melanoma in the United States every year, many of them are treated successfully by removal of the diseased cells. However, early detection is critical with melanoma before it has a chance to reach the lymphatic system and spread throughout the body.

Along with damage from the sun, using a tanning bed has also been linked to skin cancer, even melanoma.

Skin Reconstruction After Cancer

Tremendous progress has been made in the plastic surgeon community to develop surgical techniques to help people who have been disfigured by diseases like skin cancer. When skin cancer removal entails more than a small patch of skin or the skin cancer is on the face or other visible area, a plastic surgeon will repair the skin to produce a functional and more pleasing appearance.

A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon can reduce the magnitude of scars from the cancer removal or even rebuild the skin with skin tissue taken from other areas of the body. When skin cancer is present in a sensitive, visible, or cosmetically important location, it is advisable to include a plastic surgeon in your treatment so it can be planned to produce the most cosmetically appropriate and functional results.

Immunity and the Science of Cancer Fighting Foods Like Garlic and Licorice

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

A number of food and medicinal plant derivatives have been examined and then used in medicine for their immunity boosting effects to heal immunity related diseases like infections and cancer. In this article, I will write about Garlic and Licorice, the most common and effective food products.

Garlic: For centuries, garlic has been used as a powerful health enhancer. In fact, research shows an association of high garlic consumption and low rate of gastric cancer in places like Italy and China. Garlic contains a family of thiol compounds that have been tested to have antioxidant activity. Ajoene, Allicin, and allyl alcohol are some of the compounds found in garlic, wild garlic, and to a lesser extent, onions. Garlic also stimulates T cell proliferation and enhances natural killer cell cytotoxic activity. Garlic extracts boost a number of immune activities that can be related to controlling cancer. In one of the experiments, garlic extracts were shown to strengthen the oxidative bursts of macrophages. This is used to kill cancer cells, bacteria and virus producing cells. Garlic also protects lipids from being oxidized, thus preventing the formation of free radical formation. In fact, garlic extracts have also decreased cancer development in some cancer cases, when they were exposed to powerful carcinogens like radiation. It was later found by Dr Wargovich that garlic enhances the liver’s ability to neutralize and metabolize carcinogens, preventing new production of cancer cells and tumors. Such poisons are converted into harmless water soluble compounds. It is proved that the effects of certain fatty acids like prostaglandins are blocked by garlic, discouraging tumor growth. It also boosts production of detoxifying enzymes in the body. Finally, garlic compounds inhibit formation of thrombi by inhibiting platelet aggregation (blocking adhesion through integrins) reducing risk of strokes and cardiovascular disease.

Garlic is also a good source of selenium. It is advisable to use garlic at least 3 to 4 times a week for optimum results. It may be cooked or even used in raw form. Common uses can be in pasta, vegetables and salads, and even garlic breads.

Licorice: Most people recognize licorice as one of their favorite candies in their childhood. Glycyrrhizin is a licorice extract which is clinically used for anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antiviral treatments. Licorice root contains about a dozen different bioflavonoid compounds that boost the immunity system and fight cancer. It stimulates enhanced display of IL2 receptors and IL2 production, as well as phagocytosis by macrophages.

A cup of licorice tea per day will really boost up your immunity and cancer fighting capacity. You can also take licorice candy directly, if you prefer. However, it should not be taken excessively. If you have heart problems, hypertension, kidney problems, or obesity, please consult a physician before taking licorice. Excessive intake can also lead to vomiting, swelling and increase in blood pressure.

Gaining an Awareness of the Stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer in Youngsters

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Neuroblastoma stage 4 is the most advanced stage of the neuroblastoma cancer. It means that the disease has spread to other areas of the body, like the liver or bone marrow, and the prognosis is not always good.

If you are the parent of a child diagnosed with neuroblastoma in the fourth stage, read on for an overview of the disease, information on stage 4 and how the disease is treated.

A Neuroblastoma Overview

Approximately 650 cases of neuroblastoma are diagnosed every year in the U.S. It’s the third most common kind of cancer in children and the most frequent form in infants. Approximately 90 percent of all cases of neuroblastoma are diagnosed in children aged 6 and under.

About 30% of all neuroblastoma cases begin in the adrenal glands, another 30% start in the ganglia of the abdomen’s sympathetic nervous system, and the majority of the remainder begin in the neck’s sympathetic ganglia, chest or pelvis.

Rates for Five-Year Survival

The five-year survival rate for infants (under the age of 1) is 83%, while it is 55% for children between the ages of 1 to 4, and 40% for older children.

But children with stage 4 neuroblastoma normally have much lower survival rates. They hover between 50% and 80% for infants (under a year old) and drop to 15% for children over the age of 1.

Treatments Used for Stage 4 of Neuroblastoma

Children who are diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma are considered high risk. They are typically subjected to intensive, high-dosage chemotherapy accompanied by surgery and stem cell transplantations. Typically though, surgery is the first step unless the neuroblastoma has spread too far.

In most cases, treatment involves a combination of medications. The main drugs used to treat children with neuroblastoma are cisplatin, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, etoposide and topotecan. These drugs produce a positive response in two thirds of children.

In certain cases, particularly when the cancer has spread too far to be completely removed by surgery - as is the case with the fourth stage of neuroblastoma - chemotherapy is the primary treatment.

Bone Marrow Transplantation and Blood Stem Cell Transplantation

Because high-dosage chemotherapy will wipe out bone marrow, new blood cells are no longer being developed, so children are at a high risk. Because kids diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma must often undergo intense chemotherapy sessions, they should also be prepared for a bone marrow transplant and/or a secondary blood stem cell transplant.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy has been used in the past to destroy any neuroblastoma cells that remain behind after surgery. It’s also used to shrink tumors.

However, in many instances of late-stage and advanced neuroblastoma, it’s rarely used unless it’s implemented as a pain-management tool or in conjunction with chemotherapy.

Children facing cancer of any type are in such a vulnerable position. The earlier in life a malignant diagnosis, the great the prospect of survival. Parents who suspect the potential for this cancer should obtain confirmation from a trusted oncologist specializing in the disease.
