Is Your Website Ready for the 5-seconds-attention-span Challenge?

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

After decades of TV, Radio, Magazines and now Internet, we find ourselves in a society overwhelmed by information begging for attention. As a result of that we have a world with an attention span now shorter than a goldfish’s. How is the media and specially the web facing that? And how can we take advantage on way the human mind works?

By the time that there was no PCs, Internet or cell phones, the kids had just the Street and Atari to compete for their attention. The only thing that matters was trading cartridges and getting lots of video games to play. Then, with the internet, they started having access to thousands of games to play. That’s when the things started to get boring.

We live in era of too much information, and our attention span (the amount of time a person can concentrate on a single activity) is getting lower. The TV is the mostly blamed for the beginning of that, 30 years ago. To show how our attention span is getting shorter, see these examples: Radio and TV advertising air time. These ads used to be 60 seconds long, and today we have even 5 seconds ads and 2 seconds blinks. They are trying to get our attention in smaller chunks.

Attention span of a goldfish

If television is to blame for being addictive and diminish our attention span, what can we say about the Internet? When we are on the Internet, our attention span is shorter because we have too many options. As a result it is pretty difficult for a web user to keep focus on one single thing; we get quickly bored and just jump to another site.

The addictive nature of the Internet and the long hours we spent on it can leave us with an attention span of nine to five seconds –a goldfish have nine.

Five seconds to make your web Sticky

The average time an online viewer spends on a page is less than 60 seconds. But, “If a website has stickiness, it will keep your attention glued to that site rather than let you click on another one as your competitor is just one click away” explains psychiatrist Pam Briggs, of Nottingham University in the UK.

How we measure that so called stickiness?

There’s a method that measures where the user clicks or looks: the heatmap. feng-gui.com is free heatmap service where you upload a image, website, ad, photo and it simulates human vision during the first 5 seconds of exposure to an image. The algorithm that predicts the human eye reaches a 70% of accuracy compared with Eye and Mouse Tracking.

What are the benefits?

In plain English, it tells you “What people is looking at” and it’s an invaluable tool to determine:

* Product Placements and Branding Effectiveness

* Hotspots Fixations

* Hotspots Order

* Gaze Saccades

* Which areas are being ignored

Which are features that are analyzed in the images?

The basic features the algorithms analyze, to predict the what humans will look at, are:

* Color

* Orientation

* Density, Contrast

* Intensity

* Size, Weight

* Intersection

* Closure

* Length, Width

* Curve

The user jumps from one interesting spot to another following a hierarchy. The bigger ones, with more contrast elements will sure call our attention first, for example. And here is where it is important to determine the hierarchy of the information and translate it on the design. The primary task of graphic design is to create a strong, consistent visual hierarchy in which important elements are emphasized and content is organized logically and predictably.

Graphic design is visual information management, using the tools of page layout, typography, and illustration to lead the reader’s eye through the page. Readers first see pages as large masses of shape and color, foreground elements and a background field. Secondarily they begin to pick out specific information, first from graphics if they are present, and only then do they start parsing the harder medium of text and begin to read individual words and phrases. We scan images, unconsciously looking for things that drag our attention. It means that through the use of images, shapes, colors, fonts and illustrations we guide the readers, showing them were to look and what to look first, drawing a reading flow.

How to take advantage of that?

We can make the most of it, following some design principles:

* How To Improve Direction in Your Designs at snap2objects.com

* Typographic Contrast and Flow at webdesignerwall.com

* Visual hierarchy at webstyleguide.com

* Color Theory at valcasey.com

Conclusion

In the ever increasing world of media screaming for attention, is crucial to understand how our body and mind reacts to a visual stimuli. That way we can take advantage of the primitive human impulses as well as the new behavioral scenarios that media and technology bring along.

How to Make Money With Adsense

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

For those of you that would like to learn how to make money with adsense, it’s pretty straight forward. Some say even easy. The folks at Google came up with the idea back in 2003, if they could figure out a way to display ads on any website, according to the subject matter, they could sell more ads.

So they came up with Adsense. With Adsense, a webmaster can display the same ads that appear on Google’s search results with common subject as the search results. When a visitor clicks on the ad, Google gets paid for the activity. So Google gives a portion of the ad fees to the webmaster, the advertiser gets more exposure to targeted viewers, Google gets more places to display ads, and everyone is happy.

Sounds easy, and it can be. But there are a few other aspects that you need to know. Google has a very strict set of rules you must follow. So the first thing you should do if you want to learn more about Adsense and how it works is to go to Google’s web page and click on advertising programs at the bottom. Once you click there, all the Adsense info is on the right side.

OK, so now you know the rules. Let’s get to the money making part. There are a few necessary elements to making money with Adsense. Due to the nature of the business model, you have to have traffic (people who visit your website). You need to have information that has some merit for the visitor. And you need to make it as easy as possible for that visitor to see something of interest in the ads that are displayed, so they will click on the ads.

The first two go together, if you have good information of value to a visitor, the search engines will help you out by sending traffic to your website. The third part (the clicking on the ads) gets a little more tricky. Here’s where some of those strict Google rules come into play. You can’t “trick” visitors into clicking, you can’t display the ads in such a way that is not acceptable with the terms and conditions.

Speaking of the website, you should also provide a constant stream of new information, specific to your theme, and update frequently. You also want to be able to do this updating in an organized and easy manner. You will need a lot of visitors and the best way to get those visitors is more fresh content. The more the search engines see you update with quality content, the more they will serve your website up in search engine results.

The amount of money or revenue you can make is entirely dependent on the cost of the ads displayed, and the number of clicks. Prices or fees for the ads can run from as little as .20 to $40 per click based on the going competition in the Adwords fees. So the more competitive the subject area, the more the website owner gets for a click.

There is a lot of speculation what percentage of the fee that Google pays. Most agree that it’s probably around 40%, so if Google gets a $1.00, then the webmaster would get .40 of that dollar. So the higher the ad cost, the more the webmaster makes per click. As you can see, if you get 20 clicks a day at .40 that’s about $8.00 per day.

The first step in getting into the Adsense business is to choose your subject matter. The subject should be a popular one (you want a lot of potential visitors), and a competitive subject matter so that the cost of the ad is high enough to provide a good return on your efforts.

Once you have determined your subject matter, the next part is designing your website. There are many opinions on what the best layout might be in regards to updating, getting the maximum clicks per visitor (position of the ads), and attracting the traffic. Very small changes in the layout can have dramatic impact on the number clicks per visitor.

Everything about the layout and design should be constantly tested to determine if you can improve on the click rate of your visitors. Testing is the key to find out how to get the maximum yield out of your visitors regardless of your traffic volume (number of visitors per day).

There are two major schools of thought on how to run an Adsense business. One is to create as many websites as possible, spend limited time in development and move on to the next. The other is to create one very large and elaborate website (500 plus pages) and continue to develop the content.

There are pros and cons on both. Some say having 100 websites that make $20 per month and don’t require additional work is the way to go. Others want one website that produces $1000 per day and you constantly update to increase the visitors and clicks.

There are software programs available to do the many website method that help you create multiple websites a day. Of course that’s why we have so many websites these days, as with most money making opportunities, people have abused the system and created a lot of worthless websites.

Both methods can be effective if the websites are well designed, researched, and content is of value to the visitor. Throwing up a bunch of websites of no value will not make you any money. And spending time on a subject area that produces a low click fee most likely will not provide a good return on your time invested.

There’s a ton of bad information out there too. A lot of experts tell you to find a low competition subject since it would be easier to attract visitors. Look for an area where there are only a few hundred searches per month. Three to four hundred visitors a month won’t make you much money since your market is so limited. And since the area has no competition, the ad fees are probably low too.

And then there’s the opposite end of the spectrum where they suggest you go for the highest competitive terms and ad fees. There are subject areas that Google gets up to $40 per click, therefore you as a webmaster can get $16 per click. That’s the good news. The bad news is you will be competing with some of the best in the business and it’s very difficult to build any traffic.

The best suggestion I can make is to find some point between these two extremes. Find a subject that gets a good enough ad fee to provide a good return on your efforts, and low enough competition that you can achieve the necessary level of traffic.

So if you want to learn how to make money with Adsense, follow a few basic rules. No matter what method or model you use for your Adsense business, make sure your content is fresh and meaningful to the visitor. Do the proper research to determine the value of the ad fees and popularity of the subject matter. And always test different layouts to make sure you are maximizing your click rate.

Online Gifts Shopping – Easy and Convenient Shopping Option

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Our lives in the past didn’t seem to be as chaotic as what we are having right now. Nowadays, many people are even struggling how to allocate time to look after some of their most basic necessities. However, today’s age and time, we are still fortunate enough because the Internet has to the scene and cured some of our usual dilemmas. The rise of the Internet has put a mark of helping out many people to their daily problems and support their daily needs. In many ways, such invention helped make our lives more easy and convenient, from communicating to different people, negotiating deals and catching up with a long lost friend to sending gifts to loved ones for some purposes. The Internet has provided us a means for almost everything we need with only few clicks of a mouse. The advancement of our technologies in this day are making some areas of life much easier, as this article about online gifts shopping will expound.

However, we are always haunted why we need to give gifts for other people. Are we obligated to give? What’s the purpose of giving gifts? These are the major questions we should first answer before running to the mall and buy gifts. The majority and/or simplest answer can be that giving gift is a way of expressing our feelings or thoughts towards someone that may be hard to express using other means.

A gift is probably the best way to show gratitude and sentiment because of the many emotions involved with receiving a gift. Such emotions usually involves the message being expressed through the gift, which may be to congratulate, recognition, sympathy, or just thinking of you. These emotions usually satisfy the recipient by giving a sense of blissfulness feeling because of having such a wonderful surprise and through the way the sender expressed his or her feeling or thought. Different emotions and feeling are always tied to gift giving and receiving is what keeps consumers shop via the Internet on any time of the day.

We most likely know the different advantages of receiving gifts but the idea of purchasing it to loved ones, friends or colleagues can make other people loathsome. But not until today when the Internet came into our lives. Today, you don’t have to plan out which store to shop, drive there, walk around looking for the best way to express yourself, choose the right gifts, go back home, wrap it and send it. That was very exhausting, though. But now, no more worries and so much energy to use for there are many online gifts shops to enjoy using the your very own computer at the comfort of your home.

There are endless options of gifts you can find online, ranging from gifts for children, women, men, to even at a retiring stage. Designer labels or not, there are vast items available in different specialty online stores. If you want to give special surprises, then why not give personalized gifts. Almost everything available can be made personalize, from housewares, outdoor gears to office desk accessories. You can give a engraved flasks, beer mugs and other barware to a male recipient. Or embroidered bags for ladies. There are literally endless sources if you will opt to use the Internet. Social Networks - Computer Virus Playground

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Social networks are websites like Facebook and Bebo which have become incredibly popular with kids, teens and adults all over the world. They give you a great way of catching up with old friends or even just staying in touch with your current group of friends and co-workers. This type of website has moved from being what some saw as a passing “fad” to being multi-billion dollar businesses that companies like AOL are fighting to buy up. Putting it simply - Social Networks are “in”.

These sites have proven to be so popular that most companies have been forced to block access to them to stop employees spending their entire day swapping messages with their buddies online, blogging or answering their friends quizzes.

For years the world of social networking was left alone by the virus code freaks and malware magicians. These sites went largely untouched and were safe to use both inside and outside of your daytime job. That was until now. Both Bebo and Facebook are now the target of a new spate of virus attacks.

Why target social networking sites? That’s an easy one to answer. You don’t have to be a computer whiz to use any of the social networking sites. They’re designed to be deliberately easy-to-use for; so much so that people of any age can use social networking sites. That’s their big attraction.

Unfortunately that means that the same people who don’t believe in computer viruses, trojans, spyware or firewalls will quite happily click on whatever link you put in front of them. Even if the link tells them it’s about some video footage that one of their friends just “found”… This doesn’t happen in real life but of course all you have to do is put that blue hyperlink in front of them and they’ll click like mad to get at this hidden video footage or pictures of them. It makes you wonder what kind of guilty consciences some people might have!

So the virus authors now know that social networking users are highly suggestible. Put a tempting link in front of them and they’re very, very likely to click it and spread the virus further.

In the last few weeks I’ve seen people who I thought were pretty smart click on these links and riddle their systems with various types of computer virus. Most of the social networking viruses are a type of worm designed to spread via your address book. The payload varies from one to the next. Usually though it winds up with the operating system having to be fully reinstalled from scratch. Several small companies I know have had serious IT issues because of virus infections caused by viruses spread via social networking sites.

Does this mean that social networking sites should be banned full stop? Punishing everyone for the sins of a few has never been a good idea. What needs to happen is more training on Internet security issues for employers and employees alike. Explain to the people/staff the cost and employment implications of a widescale virus infection - it can close a business down.

Then again some people never learn so totally blocking all forms of social networking sites in the workplace will probably have to become common practice - for the safety and security of everyone involved.

Website Content - Your Step to Internet Success

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Websites and weblogs have become part of our everyday lives. Almost every house and office all over the world already has access to a computer and the internet. Private and public use, the internet links us to millions of other people all over the world. Websites and weblogs, on the other hand, compose most of what is to be found online. We have a variety of websites that fit different purposes. Some websites are for personal use, others for business, and some for academic use. Whatever the purpose, these websites and blogs all have something in common: content.

Website content is everything that is found in a certain website. This includes web pages, articles, photos, advertisement, and so much more. Website content is believed to be the main part of any webpage. It is the content that makes the millions of internet users visit a page.

One of the requirements of a web is to have quality content that is related to its main purpose. Web content is said to be of good quality when it is significant and important to the purpose and objective of a web page or an entire website. For example, a website about an informative travel site must contain quality content that provides information about traveling, about the different places to see, or even advertisements related to travels. Information that is in line with the webpage’s existence is also considered of quality. Now, having quality is not only a matter of relation. Quality content must also be something that website visitors find useful, interesting, or even amusing, depending on what the site is supposed to be.

Many say that creating content with high quality is difficult to maintain. It may be true for some website owners and administrators. One reason to solve this is to have a clear direction for your site. Also, web content writers who are experienced in the field of making quality web content are available for their services.

Another factor in content of websites is keywords. Keywords are certain words and phrases that appear in a significant number of times on a certain webpage or site. A keyword must be present in a web article or post, for instance. The presence of these words and phrases would make your site more search engine optimized. Search engine optimization with the use of keyword content is necessary on the Web. For instance, a person who wants to search “cigarette case designs” usually types that phrase in a search engine box (Google or Yahoo), then the search results come out. A search engine optimized website using “cigarette case designs” keywords would be on the list of search results.

One of the main purposes of having content with high quality is to generate website traffic. If your website goes up in the search listings, then this also means that more people have access to your site. For any website that aims to sell certain products and services, having more visitors can mean more clients, more sales and more profits.

Top 5 List Of What Not To Do When Building Links To Your Site

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Top 5 list of what not to do when building back links to your website.

Building links to a web site has become a lost art over the years. Recent developments in the Internet Marketing world, like the emergence and development of automated submission programs, the overwhelming amount of black-hat and immoral link building tactics, and other factors has made it appear that, when it comes to search engine marketing, the mentality of “the easier the better” is the right one to have.

This, however, couldn’t be further from the truth.

Google and other search engines do take note of what tactics you or your search engine marketing company are using when promoting your website and attempting to improve traffic and lead conversion. And when they notice things like duplicate content, link farming and spamming for links, and other tactics that have been frowned upon in the past, your site will be penalized. Here are the top of what not to do when building links to your website:

5. Mass directory submissions.

Google and other search engines have all but stated that non-niche directory sites that anyone with an internet connection can submit to are low on the totem pole. Even worse than submitting to them: submitting to all of them at once, all with the same descriptions and titles. If you go the directory route, take the time to make them unique, usually five at a time.

4. Focusing all of your link builidng efforts on blog commenting.

If you’re one of those people who think that only dofollow links matter, then you’ve recently realized that blogs allowing dofollow comments are one of the only resources still available. The amount of “link juice” that these comments is debatable, so focusing ALL link building efforts on this technique can be ill-advised. When you do blog commenting, keep it in good taste. Don’t put a long-tail keyword as the name of the commenter, don’t shamelessly self-promote in the text field, and add something relevant to the conversation. In other words: actually read the post before dropping a comment.

3. Submitting your site to non-relevant sites

You may know plenty of friends and colleagues with websites, but submitting your site to these sites which have nothing to do with your product or service offering would be shooting yourself in the foot. When search engine spiders notice that you’re being linked from a site that has nothing to do with yours, you can be penalized.

2. Focusing all of your link building efforts on social bookmarking

This goes back to the mentality mentioned in number four: if everyone can do it, it usually isn’t as effective. There are plenty of sites out there that will help streamline the social bookmarking submission efforts and throw a blog post or article out to a million different social bookmarking sites. Only use the top social bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, and other trusted bookmarking sites when using this link building technique, and if you use a number of them, change up the descriptions and titles.

1. Buying links

This seems to be Google and other search engine’s ultimate no-no. It is no secret that a number of sites have been penalized dramatically for buying text links on other sites. Stay away from http://TextLinkAds.com and other link brokers, it may seem like you get what you pay for and that others are having success with this method, but if spiders find a footprint to or from your site and it seems like you have bought links from another site or broker, you can be penalized dramatically.

1 Super Keyword Tip - It May Be All You Need

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

It’s important to comprehend the focal point of keyword research. If you’ve already been fiddling with marketing online, you will probably understand the general focus of keyword research.

However, I should tell you to pay close attention to this module, even if you have tons of experience building businesses on the web, because…and I’ll explain why, I’ve helped many people from a vast range of business backgrounds and quite different Internet marketing experience levels. And with each of those levels comes different success levels from their own efforts.

I’ve even helped multi-millionaires that are making millions of dollars in sales from the Internet each month…how did I help them, I showed them where they have to make their starting point. Even though they’re making fantastic money, they are still failing to grasp so many opportunities simply because they were not doing the proper keyword research needed and they didn’t completely understand the power of keywords.

So, even if you already know “everything” about the Internet business and you’re already getting a lot of customers…you need to pay very close attention to this module because you will find a golden thread that leads to even more riches…guaranteed. You will find information that you may have never heard of before today and this can make you a lot of money if you apply if properly.

…What are Keywords?

Keyword are words or phrases that people type into search engines looking for a particular item or a variety of subjects.

So if a company is selling dog collars, and a pet owner is looking for a new dog collar for there…dog, the person will type something like “dog collars for small dog” or “dog collar for german shepherd”.

As you can see, both of these keywords are about dog collars but they are completely focused on a different market. Do you get it?

This is just the tip of the iceberg…beginner stuff.
