Enjoy Buenos Aires, Argentina

Friday, December 5th, 2008

When we talk about Buenos Aires, our first thought is tango, leather articles, commerce, sea, beautiful architecture and a Latin-American city that seems to be ahead of its sisters in many aspects.

Buenos Aires offers many attractions for its visitors, who go to the city attracted by the nostalgic sensuality of its typical dance, the tango, an urban dance from De La Plata River, with enchanting movements. The tango’s charm and magic has goes beyond boundaries, so the capital is an excellent chance to discover it and enjoy with its exquisite music, where the main actor is the string instrument, bandoneon.

Another thing about Buenos Aires is its beautiful architecture; with a remarkable french influence that can be appreciated in its street and buildings. The establishment of many immigrants from France, Italy and Portugal developed a mixed culture in Argentina and even a special language called lunfardo, used to write the lyrics of tango. This influence is also noted in the gastronomy and popular traditions.

This city also counts with interesting districts to discover, like San Telmo, with its antiques and tango ballrooms. The city’s downtown is located in the famous Plaza de Mayo square, where is also Casa Rosada, the Government Building. In the same place there are the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Cabildo and Argentina’s National Bank.

If you follow De Mayo Avenue, you will get to National Congress (the Parliament House) and in the surroundings you will see many beautiful buildings with finest architecture, squares decorated with monuments and sculptures; and a signed reproduction of The Thinker, of Rodin.

La Boca district is the immigrant’s neighborhood. Here you will find the famous sidewalk, Caminito, a lot of museums, theaters, the Boca Juniors soccer team field, “La Bombonera” and a beautiful avenue by the port.

Some other important district is Recoleta, a neighborhood with many cultural buildings like the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library and the Graveyard, a place where are the rests of presidents and other important celebrities of the country. Palermo is another main district of the city and there is the Latin-American Art Museum, the Zoo and the Planetarium.

Corrientes Avenue is the center of bohemia and spectacle in the city, with many theaters like San Mart?n and Luna Park Stadium. In the intersection of Corrientes Avenue and 9 de Julio Avenue it is located the Obelisk, a monument that is a symbol of Buenos Aires in the world.

Other interesting place to discover is Colon Theater, a great building from the XIX century, with marble floor, amazing vitreaux and elegant halls. Colon Theater also has an Arts Institute, with important students from it and a public library, with a complete bibliography with many titles referent to music and arts, besides the full collection of specialized magazines in these subjects.

The modern architecture can be appreciated in Puerto Madero district, with its skyscrapers built in the last decade. One of them is the remarkable Espacial Tower, with 220 meters of height, which is located in the Entertainment Park of Buenos Aires.

The Amsterdam Alternative to Hotels

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Think Amsterdam and you might envision Old-World buildings nestled around curving canals, the bright lights of downtown’s Red Light District and a host of cultural opportunities awaiting the avid tourist. With so much to do, where should you stay?

Amsterdam offers a housing option that few European cities can boast – houseboats.

Why deal with a noisy hotel when you can float peacefully on your own private boat?

Having visions of sleeping in bunks and taking turns at a leaky head? Have no fear. Amsterdam houseboats are built like miniature yachts and offer their guests every amenity a hotel can provide - and more. Amsterdam houseboats are built with living rooms complete with entertainment systems, kitchens, spacious bedrooms, and real bathrooms (No claustrophobic water closets here.) Some houseboats also include terraces and even mini gardens where guests may sit, relax, and watch the activity on the waterway.

When choosing an Amsterdam houseboat for rent, you’ll want to make sure you’re near the center of town, not docked so far away that you’ll need a bus or taxi to take you to your touring destination. On Prinsengracht Canal, in the heart of Amsterdam’s charming and popular Jordaan Quarter, is docked “The Astarte Temple” Nearby is the Noorderkerk Marketplace and some of Amsterdam’s famous night-clubs, caf?s, shops and galleries. “The Lilly Houseboat” also waits to take weary travelers away from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam’s busy streets, and then back again the next day.

Located close to the newly renovated Westerpark, “The Lilly Houseboat” is within walking distance of the shops and Cantraal Station. “The Nina Houseboat” has been recently renovated and is docked just outside the city’s center. Guests on the “Nina” will enjoy beautiful views and still be close to the Waterloosquare, Rembrandtsquare and the longest market in the Netherlands. Downtown Amsterdam is a short 10-minute bicycle ride away.

When renting a houseboat, plan your vacation well in advance and plan to stay for a while. Smaller houseboats begin with three-day rentals while the larger luxury boats may require monthly commitments. However long you plan to stay, plan to relax and let the gentle sway of the canals rock you to sleep in your own Amsterdam houseboat.

Disney World as a Honeymoon Destination

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Most people think of Disney World as a place to take the kids, but more and more newlywed couples are discovering that the Happiest Place on Earth is also a wonderful place to celebrate your honeymoon.

Affording a Disney World Honeymoon

It isn`t always cheap to stay at Disney World, but even so, it`s lower cost than going on a cruise or heading somewhere like Fiji. If you can`t afford the vacation on your own, why not set up a honeymoon registry where guests can donate to a honeymoon fund or even specify where they want money to go (toward a hotel room, park tickets, meals, etc.). Even if you don`t raise the full amount, this can be a great way to lower the cost of such a delightful vacation.

Where to Stay

There`s really nothing as luxurious or romantic as staying in a major Disney resort. While many of the hotels located on Disney property are aimed at children, you`ll find that the Animal Kingdom Lodge is the perfect place for a happy couple. Book a room overlooking the savannahs where you can see giraffes wandering outside your window in the morning for a truly romantic getaway.

What to Do

Disney World isn`t short on activities for adults. For a great honeymoon, look at doing more than just jumping on your favorite roller coasters!

An afternoon at the spa could be just the thing to relax and prepare for a romantic evening after a day in the parks. Enjoy a massage, facial or even a pedicure for women. This offers couples a little alone time . . . something that is necessary, even in newlywed bliss.

Disney often features special shows by Cirque du Soleil and other famous acts that make the perfect evening activity. Book ahead, though, since these tickets tend to go quickly. You can find out ahead of time which shows will be on while you are there. Within the parks, there are often evening parades and light shows, as well, that can be fun to catch and the perfect opportunity for a little cuddling in the chill of the evening.

Most visitors to the parks assume that you need to visit the parks every day, but this certainly isn`t required. It can be lovely to take a day to rent bikes and cycle around the enormous property or play a round of golf, if you are into it. Another option is to go swimming in the resort`s pool, or just relax in the hot tub together.

There are plenty of grown up attractions at the parks to enjoy together. From the safari in the African section of the Animal Kingdom to visiting countries around the Pavilion, you`ll find more than enough non-kiddy rides and attractions to keep any couple busy.

At night, if you are in the mood to party, you can hit one of the two nightclubs on the Disney property and dine in one of dozens of amazing restaurants in Downtown Disney or Disney`s Boardwalk. The fine dining options are many and ensure that you`ll have a great experience while celebrating your honeymoon.

Be sure to take things slowly, chances are you won`t want to be involved in a whirlwind of activities throughout your entire honeymoon. It`s good to schedule in some relaxation time, as well, where you can be together, just the two of you and enjoy the fact that you are now a married couple.

It`s something that many people forget in their rush to enjoy a Disney World honeymoon but you`ll enjoy it far more if you leave some down time in the schedule.

Florida, USA – The Name Says it All

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Florida was inhabited by people 12,000 years ago and most of the animals of the world lived here. Some of them have become extinct now e.g. The saber-tooth tiger, giant armadillo, camel and of course the mastodon.

The natives, before the arrival of Europeans, in Florida used to eat nuts, plants, small animals and shellfish. They cultivated agriculture and traded with people of the South Eastern US and increased their social organizations. It is reflected in large temples that they built and village complexes.

The Spanish came here in 1513 and a Spanish explorer named Ponce de Leon named the area la Florida in honor of Pascua Florida, the feast of the flowers - Spain’s Easter time Celebrations.

The French followed, making the Spaniards flee and the French made the first permanent settlement in Florida. Spaniards returned with more forces and burned all the things that related to the French. In1763 British gained control of Florida from the Spanish, leaving the state with just a few settlements.

When the British evacuated Florida many people came pouring in, especially the slaves who escaped from various places to come here as they knew that there was no enslavement there. Many came because of favorable Spanish terms for land grabs. The Floridians that settled here became more ‘American’ than ‘Spanish.’

Finally the US took control of the territory in 1821. On 3rd March, 1845 Florida became the 27th state of the US. William D. Mosley was elected the first Governor. Its population also grew tremendously.

Florida didn’t take part in the Civil War and no battle was fought on Florida soil. Many coastal towns and forts were occupied by the Union forces though the Florida state remained in Confederate hands.

During the final quarter of the 19th century, Florida’s large scale agriculture became commercial, especially cattle rising. Cigar making industries also took root here.

The story of a momentous battle is told at the Dade Battlefield State Historic Site and the enactment of this battle is sponsored by Dade Battlefield Society. It is held on the weekends that fall nearest to the actual date of the battle. Festivities begin at 9am and continue up to the sunset of the last day.

The park has a battlefield, beautiful visitor center and a museum in 50 acres of pinelands that has oak trees, magnolias, woodpeckers, song birds and gopher tortoises and many other type of species of wild life.

Only surviving antebellum plantation house in South Florida is the Gamble Plantation State Historic Site. It used to be the home of Major Robert Gamble and his 3500 acres of sugar plants. In 1925 the park was donated to the State by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Today it is refurbished in the style of a plantation of mid-19th century. A guided tour to the mansion exhibits the style of living in that era.

Paynes Creek State Historic Site is situated in the memory of Captain George S. Paynes who was killed by the Seminoles. There of course used to be friction between the new white settlers and the native Indians - Seminoles. The US Govt. opened an office for the Seminoles as they could then be approached whenever needed.

In spring of 1849 the office - The Darling Store - was opened and the Seminoles attacked the office on 17 July 1849. It is now a grave site and is marked with a grave stone marked near the office. In the attack two clerks of the office were killed and one injured.

Trails for hiking go through the woods to the place where there used to be the office. The trading post and the events that happened then are located in the visitor center. Picnic tables and chairs are available here to have a great lunch and relax.

Visit Florida soon says Jackie Mansfield - and for your next airport London transfer just contact London Airport Shuttle. London Airport Transfers are available to all Central London hotels and homes.
