Nevertheless knowledge of how to communicate by written words is a very great help in communicating orally.

The art of communicating by means of written English words is called English composition, or rhetoric. A matter of prime importance to each man is that, in business or in society, he should be able to say or write exactly what he means. A businessman may lose money by failing to make himself clearly understood; misunderstandings and quarrels arise between friends because some one has failed to write just what he meant; a man is liable to be taken for a boor if he abuses the English language.

Writing is a trade in which every educated man, woman, and child should be skilled. Writing is a trade, which any one can master if he goes about it in the right way. It is true that writing skill is often the only trade of some people like the poets, novelists, newspaper reporters and editors. 1. Incorrect Use of Quotation Marks

Many people use quotation marks when they mean to highlight something. This is not correct. Quotation marks are meant to indicate dialogue in fiction, as in, “Let’s go to the movies,” Joe said to Mary.

Another use of quotation marks is to indicate the title of a book or film. However, this is going out of style and is not necessary. You can use italics, as well as capitalizing the words, as in Star Wars, The Simpsons, or Romeo And Juliet.

Quotations are not meant to be used to stress or highlight something, as in “On Sale Today!” Use bold text, italics or larger print for this.

2. Extra Apostrophes

Apostrophes are used to indicate possession, as in John’s house or Susan’s car.

They also indicate contractions, as in “can’t” for “cannot,” or “they’ve” for “they have.”

There is no need to use apostrophes to indicate plural, as in “Car’s For Sale.”

This is incorrect, though commonly done.

3. Run On Sentences

Commas, and the word “and” help to clarify sentences and break up long sentences. Long sentences can also be separated into two or more sentences.

Consider this:

“I woke up late this morning was late for the bus and got to work late and missed an important meeting.”

Without commas, this sentence is awkward. It can be rewritten to read:

“I woke up late this morning, and was late for the bus. I got there late and missed an important meeting.”

Remember to consult with a punctuation guide if you are unsure about something.

Creative Writers - Can You Write Good Transition Sentences?

Creative writers and journalists sometimes have the problem of smoothly transitioning from one paragraph to the other, especially when they are changing the subject. This is a learned skill that is not hard to master. By the time you read this article, you will fully understand the trick to it.

When we writers hop from one topic to another without a transition sentence, we “jar” our readers. While sentence transitions may be the last line in a paragraph, they are more commonly used as the first line in a new paragraph. They are like a bridge, connecting one idea to another.

Warted characters are memorable. The warts help the reader identify the characters in their minds.

Huh? What happened to the discussion on transition sentences? Were you trying to figure that out? If so, now you know how a “jarred” reader feels. Warts don’t relate to transition sentences at all, but we can make them relate by connecting the topics like this: (repeat)

“While sentence transitions may be the last line in a paragraph, they are more commonly used as the first line in a new paragraph. They are like a bridge, connecting one idea to another.

[transition sentence]

We could compare sentence transitions to ‘warts’ on characters. ‘Just as a ‘wart’ will blend readers minds with the character’s identification, transition sentences will blend readers minds to the change of topics.”

(Notice that we can use more than one transition sentence to help the reader follow our train of thought.)

Here is another example from a camping article. We’re picking up toward the end of the article. The subject was preparing for a vacation and using a credit card for gasoline purchases. It will now blend into an after-vacation recap of never paying interest. See if you can pick out the transition words.

“For every $1,000 you charge on a Flying J credit card per month, you will receive a $10 coupon, which can be used at the online Flying J, or in their restaurant.

By combining the above suggested methods with this plan, you will seldom, if ever, run out of vacation money or have to use an ATM machine; further you will never owe interest, never make a physical payment, and never carry a balance.”

What were the transition words? I’ll tell you - “By combining… ” and the word “further”. Those three little words exited a financial camping program and carried the subject to the after-vacation recap.

Certain words make good transitions. Some of them are: further, besides, in addition to, instead of, specifically, to sum up, although, beyond, close, for instance, again, moreover, accordingly, as a result, during, to illustrate, finally, on the contrary, to compare, consequently, if, then, meanwhile, but, nevertheless, therefore, subsequently, otherwise, so, formerly.

Your Assignment: pick up something to read and pick out the transition words. They will always be in the first sentence of the next paragraph. After you’ve done this a few times, look at some of your own work and see if you can improve your transitions.

Creative Writers – Learn to Write Your Emotions

As a creative writer, you must feel the mood your are writing about. It is imperative if you want to reach your audience. And how are you supposed to do that? By experiencing the mood.

Let’s suppose you want to write a scene that displays anger. Maybe the story is about abuse, a mom and dad arguing, or sibling rivalry. Maybe it’s about a girl breaking up with her boyfriend because he was playing around on the side. If the scene is intense, you have to get into the mode. I mean red, piping hot angry.

Remember the guy or gal that dumped you 30 years ago? Remember the time you had a bad dream about your mate and you wouldn’t speak to him all day? How about when you got steamed at the boss, or got into a heated argument over politics, world affairs, abortion, women’s rights, etc.? As a writer, you must capture those emotions again and write them into your scenes. It should be so real that you will need to attend anger management classes to get over it.

Do you need to be happy? Then think of some very happy occasions. Sing really crazy! Laugh like an idiot! And when you begin laughing at yourself, it’s time to write that joy into your scene.

Another way to develop the needed emotions is to imagine yourself as the character and write entries in a diary from his/her point of view. Live the make-believe life. Do whatever it takes to crawl into your character’s skin. You can’t write effectively what you don’t know or aren’t in the mood for. (You can, however, write a draft for the scene and come back to build it in a more realistic way later.)

Remember that your protagonist (main character, hero) and antagonist (villain) must be three-dimensional characters. They must have a past and a future; they must have problems in their lives and they must work through those problems like real, live people. Those characters should be real enough to walk off the page in your reader’s mind and sit next to them. If the reader can’t identify with the characters, they aren’t likely to stay with the story.

I remember when my daughter was 16-years old. It was not uncommon for her to sit on the floor Indian style, and bawl her eyes out over a drama TV show. One night I winked at my husband and said, “That actress is playing her part really well, isn’t she?” He picked up on it and we talked back and forth about the actress’ career and wondered out loud what movie they would play in next.

Our daughter turned around, tears dripping off her cheeks, and said, “Quit it, you guys. You’re ruining the show!” But what she really meant was, “I’m into the character. I feel what she is feeling. Don’t move me out of the scene.”

If your characters aren’t three-dimensional, you’ll lose your readers. Put yourself into the mood and into the groove. Live what you write.

Creative Writers Learning To Deal With Rejection

Creative writers have a hard time dealing with criticism – constructive or otherwise. After all, our written words are our babies, and how dare anyone criticize them or try to change them! Right? Wrong. That is a beginner’s point of view. You will be light years ahead when you can accept and actually use constructive criticism to your advantage.

One of the best ways to do this is to join a writing club. There are dozens of them, but the one I like the best is http://Writing.com. You have the opportunity to publish your stories on site and let other writers read and rate your article from one to five stars. Then it’s your turn to visit their port to read and rate some of their articles.

I will admit that there is a very small percentile of nasty people who take pleasure in jabbing newbies, and one such encounter is enough to cripple you for a long time, but I credit the site’s head master for taking proper steps in dealing with such riff-raff.

As an example, I had one story that consistently drew a five star rating and one day a woman rated it one star and wrote this message: “If you really want to be a good writer, you need to read good authors so you’ll know what good writing is. I rated your story one star, and I would have rated it less if I could have, but I admit I only read the first paragraph.”

Whoa! Talk about someone running over you with cleat shoes! I felt like a wooly worm that had just been stepped on. However, I learned two things. Firstly, you can’t pay attention to everyone. There are some real weirdos out there, and secondly, I learned to write snappy first paragraphs!

My defenses were up for a long time after that, but I remember the day when I let them down and actually heeded a helpful critique. I decided to use the lady’s suggestions, and I even thanked her for them. From that day on, I used 95% of all the critiques I received. At first I did it as an experiment, but when my ratings soared, I did it because I knew I was learning.

Dealing with rejection is a part of every writer’s life. Learn who you should share your work with. Don’t let family members or friends (who are not writers) read your work. They don’t know what they’re talking about, but they will try to teach you how to write. It’s easier to learn from strangers.

When you try to sell your stories or articles, you are sure to receive rejection slips. I wish so much that I had kept mine so I could put them into the album that now holds all of my published clippings.

Rejection is a learning time in every writer’s life, but ultimately you must learn to grow a thick hide and you will be the better for it.

Creative Writers Use Inference to Say More by Saying Less

All creative writers use inference, whether by choice or by accident. So you may be thinking, “If I can do use it by accident, why should I study it?” You should study it because you can use the technique more effectively if you understand all the ramifications involved.

This is inference:

Mary was in labor. She had a monkey.

This is the type of headlines you read in the Enquirer and other such magazines. On the surface, one could assume the following:

1. A woman had mated with a monkey and got pregnant

2. She went to the hospital to give birth

3. Her baby wasn’t a child, it was a monkey

4. It was a historical event

5. This event would open new doors to the medical community and scientists

6. The news media would hound the monkey child throughout its life

7. Documentaries would undoubtedly be created

8. A movie would be in the making

Thoughts would flood your mind. Did the woman go on a safari? Was she attacked by a monkey or an ape? Where was her husband? Or was she even married? How will her family accept the monkey baby? Does it have any human characteristics?

Or, you could read it the way I was thinking when I wrote it: Mary was in labor, and she owned a monkey. Do you see what inference can do?

Mystery authors quite often mislead the reader by dropping clues that can be read the wrong way. Inference is also used in riddles, jokes and some games.

Inference creates a mental puzzle for the reader to solve. The reader’s mind will always jump past the immediate and form its own conclusions, based on the information they have been fed. If the writer wants to, he can change the mental image in the next sentence.

Another example:

The bride collapsed in tears, and could not be consoled.

We might think:

1. The groom didn’t show up for the wedding

2. Someone dropped the wedding cake

3. The organist or preacher could not be there

We could imagine all sorts of things, but what I’m actually thinking is that her father died of a heart attack during the wedding. From what I said, however, it is unlikely that anyone would grasp that meaning. The reader will infer their own meaning into the given evidence and come forth with their own conclusion. In other words, they will supply the lacking evidence by their own definition of what would cause a bride to collapse in tears.

Inference is a great tool. You can infer that a man is in love with his best friend’s wife without ever saying it. You can further infer that they are having a love affair, that the husband knows nothing at all about it, but hubby is about to find out. If you introduce a gun into the equation, you can infer someone is going to die as a result.

7 Techniques to Make Your Article More Useful to Readers

Whether you are writing articles for article directories or posts for your blog, your goal should be to make them useful to readers. But, most of the articles and blog posts are full of vague generalities and they contain a pile of words and sentences meant for search engine rankings only.

If you make your contents useful to readers and strategically use a few key words to make it search engine friendly, you will not only attract search engine traffic but also develop readers’ loyalty who will promote your brand virally.

How do you make your article useful to readers? Use the 7 techniques discussed in this article to make an impact on your readers.

1. Use examples to elaborate your point. Without example the writing becomes an exercise in abstraction and many readers will not have a clue as to what you are trying to convey. You can either start with examples and than generalize message to an abstract concept or you can start with a general statement and elaborate it with examples.

If you are discussing several concepts, start with a simple example and build on the same example to illustrate all of your concepts. Switching to different examples for each of your concept, will leave the readers wondering how all the concepts you have discussed in your article relate to each other.

2. Use analogy, metaphor, and story. Analogies are very instructive and they provide insights to an unknown concept using a known concept. For example, you can explain back links by saying, ‘a back link to your website is like a vote for your site. If you have more votes than your competitors, you win. More back links to your site means higher ranking in search engine results.’

Metaphors are also used to compare two different concepts but the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ are not used in metaphors. Our every day speech is full of metaphors, e.g. ‘raining cats and dogs’, ‘old flame’, etc. Use them to liven up your prose but be cautious. Improper use may sow confusion in the reader’s mind.

If you have a personal story, use them to illustrate your point. Stories are very powerful in conveying a message. A Story resonances more in the minds of the readers than an abstract concept.

3. Enhance value by incorporating opinions. Bloggers often link to other articles and write a sentence or two to introduce a topic. While this is a good practice in letting your readers know what others are thinking in the related topics, you can enhance the value of the post by including your opinions and inviting others to post their own thoughts in the comment section.

4. Use Quotes from Authoritative Writings. You may already know about the value of using quotes from your college essay writing class. Quotes from authoritative figures help increase the value of your opinion and thoughts. You can proclaim that you are not the lonely person who has this crazy thought, but lots of respected people do agree with your insights.

5. Use illustrations and charts. You can use this technique in Squidoo lenses, Hubpages and in your own blog posts. This technique may not be possible for general article marketing sites because of the popular article directories don’t allow images and videos in the article.

Some concepts are difficult to explain using words only. However, a simple illustration helps readers grasp the concept easily. Readers can also easily remember a chart than a few paragraphs of a blog post.

You don’t have to be a graphic artist to create useful illustrations. Use MS PowerPoint or other free chart software to create your charts. Use screen captures when writing a ‘how to article’ about the use of software.

6. Write Pros and Cons. Most articles discuss only one side of a topic; either the writer is for or against it. Why no use both sides of the coin? Share your opinions about why it is good for your readers and what your readers should be cautious about while using or implementing the concept in your article.

7. Let your article sit for a day or two. Don’t rush to submit your articles to all the article directories as soon as you finish writing it. Wait for a day or two and read the articles again to see if you can add or modify some thing to make it more useful to your readers.

Does your article provide any useful information to readers to make their life better? It does not always have to be materialistic gains for your readers. Even if you can share humor or inspiration with your readers using your prose, you have achieved your goal of providing value by your writing.

In the web information is cheap but valuable information is few and far between. If you do your part in making your readers happy, you will be recognized as an expert in your field and money will flow.
